I remember listening to The Distance on the radio, back in the day. In my mind I vaguely connect it with When Doves Cry and Fire Water Burn; songs on the radio around the same time. I didn’t hear the rest of the album until much later, but it’s great stuff. Cake seem to have this strange ability to combine country, trumpets and rap into a sexy mix of alt. rock. The only thing more awesome than their guitar riffage is their lyrics. The cover of I Will Survive is probably one of the best versions I’ve ever heard. John McCrea sings it with a dry bitterness that Gloria Gaynor just can’t match.
